Both South and North Carolina have populations that include many people of Scotch Irish descent. These groups were attracted to the mountain and Piedmont areas that reminded them of the rolling hills and highlands of Scotland and Ireland. Bagpipes have remained an essential element of the musical heritage of these groups and over time of our culture at large culminating in events such as the Greater Greenville Scottish Games & Highland Festival.
